What Is Viagra?
Viagra is a well-established medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Its active ingredient, Sildenafil, was originally developed by Pfizer and became the first FDA-approved treatment for ED in 1996. Since then, Viagra has remained one of the most widely recognized and commonly used ED medications worldwide, with Cialis being its primary alternative.
Erectile dysfunction affects millions of men, including an estimated 3 million men aged 40 and older in Canada. Viagra works by relaxing the smooth muscles of blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation. Improved circulation results in a firmer erection and better endurance.
Viagra belongs to a class of medications known as PDE5 inhibitors. It does not cause an erection on its own—sexual arousal is required for the medication to be effective. These medications do not increase libido but support erectile function when reduced blood flow is the underlying cause. If ED is related to hormonal imbalances or other non-circulatory factors, alternative treatments may be more appropriate.
Compared to Cialis, Viagra has a shorter duration of action, typically lasting 4 to 6 hours, and generally works more quickly. Due to its shorter active window, timing is important, and some individuals may require repeat dosing on different occasions depending on need.
Important: Viagra does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or prevent pregnancy. Barrier protection such as condoms should be used to reduce the risk of STI transmission and unintended pregnancy.
Recommended Dosage
Viagra is taken orally, with or without food, and is commonly used on an as-needed basis. It should be taken approximately 30 minutes before sexual activity.
Dosage may vary depending on individual health factors, and guidance from a healthcare professional is recommended.
